Melting Pots

September 15, 2009

Latinos, African Americans, Asians, Arabics, are just a few of the different races that come to my mind when I think of different cultures that make up The United States. I couldnt imagine living in a world where diversity didnt exist. I couldnt imagine having to go through all the inspections or having to take tests to decide whether I’d be allowed into the United States or not like immigrants had to in the early 1900’s. Im a huge city girl from Cleveland, Ohio. I would say that Cleveland is a huge melting pot. I’ve been raised to be open to all different types of cultures and to not discriminate against anyone. I graduated from a high school where the minority rate ruled. All my friends back home are either Puerto Rican or Black so going to a university that has a very low minority rate does take me a little out of my comfort zone, but I’ve learned to adjust and I’ve made some great friends along the way.

I know that racism in todays society still exists and I absolutely hate it. Of course there are a lot of people in this world who have been raised in  prodominently white suburban neighborhoods so they really havent had the chance to interact with other cultures. I think this is where alot of stereotypes kick in. I think racial stereotypes play a big part in pop culture. We have famous comedians like George Lopez and Kat Williams who take these stereotypes and turn them into jokes. But then we have other famous people like Kanye West who just brings more attention to racial tensions like when he said “George Bush doesnt care about Black people”.  The United States is more diverse today then its ever been. With cities like New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Chicago we see how diversity plays a huge role in everyday life.  I hope that one day all the racial tensions that do exist can come to end so we can live in a society that is more open to different cultures.
