Everything Bad Is Actually Good For You

November 19, 2009

After reading the book “Everything Bad Is Good For You” my view on pop culture really changed. Before reading the book I saw pop culture as just being nothing more than pop culture. I didnt view pop culture as being good for me, as in it was actually making me smarter without me even realizing it.  In the book Johnson makes really great points on how everything from video games to the Internet is actually making us smarter.I didn’t really see how going on Facebook or playing video games was making me smarter. But once i got more in-depth into the book I was like “Wow I never saw it in that way”.

He makes a lot of compelling statements on how tv and film is making us smarter as well. Before reading this book I didnt really pay much attention to how much I’ve learned from watching television.”Popular television shows and to a slightly lesser extent popular films have also increased the cognitive work they demand from their audience.” This is a statement made by Johnson that I completely agree with.  Not only have I learned from watching programs on television such as the news, The History Channel, or National Geographic but I also learned a lot from thinking critically and analyzing certain shows like CSI and Grey’s Anatomy.

Many of the cases on CSI are actual real life cases. CSI follows cases in the Las Vegas area with a group of highly trained crime scene investigators. Each case, some more unusual and eerie than the others, allows viewers the opportunity to see just how far technology has come over the years. It also allows us to ask questions such as ‘Who committed the crime?” or “How are they going to catch the murderer?” When questions like these are asked and are left unanswered it keeps the viewers tuning in week after week thus learning something new every time they tune in.

Facebook & Religion

November 19, 2009

So lets admit it not everyone is religious and it’s not a crime not to be. Everyone has the freedom to choose what they want to believe in and what they don’t. When i first created my Facebook account I did choose catholic as my religious beliefs.  In the reading Soul- Searching on Facebook they said “Since then, Facebook’s beliefs box has generated a staggering number of entries. So exactly how many users put down “beer” as their religion? How many “Catholic”? What correlations exist between religion and number of friends?” I dont think many people care or even pay attention to what people’s religious views are, well at least I dont. I dont believe that religion makes a person who he/she is. There are so many different types of religions all across the world so who is to say that Catholics are better than Jews or Baptists are better than Lutherans in my opinion we are all equal.

Over the past couple of years celebrities have been very open about their religious views. Lets take Madonna for example, she follows the religious views of Kabbalah. Kabbalah is a discipline and school of thought concerned with the mystical aspect of Judaism. “Madonna stunned concert organizers in Ireland with her backstage demands which, according to sources, included a request for 25 cases of Kabbalah water. The one-time Material Girl refuses to drink anything but the water sold by the trendy religious movement, which some have called a cult. She spends $10,000 a month on this water.”(msnbc.msn.com) Drinking spiritually blessed water that costs $10,000 a month is a little extreme, but hey if you love your religion and have the money to spend on spiritual water then why not? In the picture below we even see Madonna wearing a shirt that says “Kabbalists Do It Better”.  Wearing shirts that express your religion and drinking special blessed Kabbalah water that cost thousands of dollars is a little extreme in my opinion. But everyone is entitled to practice their religion as freely as they please and if that means wearing t-shirts and buying expensive water then so be it. I guess?

Reality or Not?

November 17, 2009

There are so many reality tv shows on television nowadays that I’ve completely lost count. From MTV to VH1 to Bravo to TLC, there are so many networks that show so many popular reality television shows. Now how many of these shows are actually 100% real? With shows like The Hills and For The Love of Ray J a lot of what goes on in the show is scripted. Even though people know a lot of these shows are scripted it doesnt keep them from tuning in week after week season after season. Yea of course The Hills is scripted but I’ve been a devoted fan since the days of Laguna Beach.

“That doesn’t matter to the viewers of this show or the one that spawned it – the faux reality sensation “Laguna Beach.” Both have the pretense, form and feel of a reality show, though the situations and dialogue come straight from a page.In a way, part of the appeal of “The Hills” is that it’s pretending to be reality. This is reality as someone who has never lived in reality might see it.”(http://legacy.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20060530/news_lz1c30hills.html)

Even though The Hills is completely scripted it still attracts the attention of millions of viewers. People especially females love watching one thing unfold and thats DRAMA. As long as these reality tv shows continue with the juicy drama filled storylines people are going to continue to tune in. Besides thats what it’s all about ratings right? Drama creates for more ratings, so whether the drama is completely real or completely scripted people will continue to tune in.

This video that was made for The Chelsea Lately Show is so funny. They poke fun of the characters and drama on The Hills. While watching this I started to laugh because of the way they make fun of the characters on the show. The references they make are so true which makes this video very funny.

The Uncelebrity

November 17, 2009

Jon & Kate, Octomom,Tiffany from I Love New York are just a few names that come to mind when I think of people who just become super famous overnight. Before people use to have tons kids and not get any attention for it.  But now in today’s society if you have a set of sextuplets or octuplets your sure to get your own reality show, magazine photo shoots, and plenty of attention from the press. Jon & Kate Gosseling were just a normal family living in the middle of nowhere Pennsylvania but then Kate gets pregnant and pushes out six kids and before you know it we couldnt turn on the T.V or walk by a news stand without hearing and seeing all the controversy surrounding this family.“Regular folks offer up their life stories throwing in their dignity and self-respect along with it — and out comes a series of pointless interviews, a book deal, a speaking tour, a reality show, plus CD’s, jewelry lines, skin product endorsements and everything else under the sun.” This was said in the reading ‘The triumph of the Uncelebrity.” I really agree with everything said in this reading. In today’s society it doesnt take much for a normal joe to become the next hot topic in the media. For example Heidi & Spencer from the reality tv show The Hills they became famous overnight. I personally find them to be attention cravers and super annoying, they do anything for attention. In case they havent realized if it werent for the show The Hills they would just be some normal old couple living in Los Angeles, California. But since the media shines so much light on them they totally feed off all of the attention they get. They try to act like they are some big time celebrities when in fact they are just a couple of spoiled wannabe’s. Yea they are famous now but just how long will that fame last? Only time will tell.

Reply to C.C’s blog

October 27, 2009

I definitely agree with C.C’s post. Movies have a great way of inventing quotes that become so popular and unforgettable. Some of us even know popular quotes to movies we havent even seen. Off the top of my head I can think of so many memorable movie quotes that I knew of even before I saw the movie it came from. For example the popular quote “Say hello to my little friend” from the movie Scarface was a quote I knew even before I saw the movie. No matter what kind of genre the movie is the quotes still say stuck in our head. I have some friends who can quote almost entire movies from all different types of genres.

The 2 movies that I can quote the most from are “The Notebook” and “Superbad”. These 2 movies are completely different, they have no similarities at all but the quotes in these 2 movies have stayed stuck in my mind since the first time I’ve seen them. The Notebook is my favorite romance of all time and the one quote that I absolutely love in that movie is when Noah tells Allie “If you’re a bird, I’m a bird”. I bet if you say that quote to any girl who loves romances she can tell you exactly where the quote came from.

Superbad is one of my favorite movies and there are so many quotes in this movie that will just make you laugh until your stomach hurts. ‘I am Mclovin” has to be one of the movies most famous quotes.

There are so many famous quotes from so many different movies that we cant simply name them all. Whether the quotes come from movies that we’ve seen or movies we havent these quotes have and will continue to shape our culture.

Reply to “Reality show spinoffs”

October 15, 2009

So when it comes to reality television I’m one of the millions of Americans who tune in week after week to watch the drama unfold. Whether its reality shows on MTV,VH1, or Oxygen I love them all.  I use to watch a lot of scripted television but is it me or have reality TV shows become the new scripted television? Of course a lot of the reality TV shows are scripted for example The Hills on MTV. The Hills is a spinoff of Laguna Beach which I’m insanely obsessed with. I’d have to say its one of MTV’s most popular shows.

I think reality TV shows such as The Hills are such a huge phenomenon because so many girls can relate to the characters and all the drama that happens on the show. Season after season girls tune in to watch the new friendships, rivals, love affairs, and drama unravel. This isnt only true with scripted reality TV shows but also with scripted shows like Gossip Girl and 90210. These drama filled scripted and non-scripted shows will continue to attract audiences as long as the juicy drama and gossip continues.

Reply to ‘Sexy kittens and Cougars Oh my” “tv moms have come along way”

October 15, 2009

Ive also noticed how the image of “mom” in most shows have changed. There also seems to be alot more reality TV shows potraying the sexy hard working mom. Reality TV shows such as The Real Housewives of Orange County or The Real Housewives of Atlanta potray the mothers as being not necessarily a housewife but being independant full time succesful working women who at the end of the day go home and play the role of mommy. These women in these TV shows live expensive extravegant lifestyles. Some of them paying thousands of dollars for plastic surgery, personal trainers, and dieticians just so they could look fabulous in there 40’s. Also mentioning that they dress in the best clothes, drive the nicest cars,  live in the most beautiful homes and get absolutely everything they want no matter the cost.

Even though these women live a certain kind of lifestyle we can defenately see how no matter what there children and being a good parent comes first. We also see how these womens lives aren’t just about Prada purses or 1st class trips to Cabo but that they face real life problems day to day. I think that no matter what kind of a lifestyle a woman lives or how different times may become that the nurturing motherly side of women will always and forever exist.
