Reply to The Power of Fandom

November 19, 2009

In this blog Alyssa makes a lot of good points regarding fandom that I agree with. Some point in everyone’s lives they become a fan of something. Now I am a fan of many different things ranging from celebrities to movies to food to certain make-up products. Being a devoted fan to something regardless of what it may be is what keeps not only things in the media but things in the world alive. But theres a fine line between being a fan and being obsessed.

In the world of celebrity there are fans and there are stalkers as we discussed in class. For example the stalker case of Gwyneth Paltrow. “WHO? Dante Michael Soiu WHAT HAPPENED? Soiu reportedly sent numerous packages, e-mails and letters, even going so far as to show up at Paltrow’s parents’ home in California. THE RESULT The pizza delivery man was convicted in December 2000 of stalking and committed to a high-security psychiatric hospital in California.”(http://www.boston.com/ae/celebrity/gallery/celeb_stalkers?pg=6)

As Alyssa stated fandom does have some negative but also some positive.  Do you think certain shows like Seinfeld would’ve lasted as many seasons as it did if it werent for the fans? I think not. Seinfeld is such a popular show that ran for 9 seasons airing from 1989 to 1998 and has been in syndication ever since. Seinfeld continues to get great ratings because of the great fan base this show has. In 2008 Entertainment Weekly ranked Seinfeld as the third best show of the last 25 years.

Being a fan of something is completely normal. Now getting to a point where you become obsessed and start stalking a person is not so normal. I feel as fans we hold the power in our hands to keep whatever it is we are fans of around as long as we like.
